Neuromuscular disorders strike 1.5 million Americans annually, afflicting both young and old. Diseases such as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, muscular dystrophy, peripheral neuropathy, myasthenia gravis and myopathies are debilitating, often progressive, and sometimes fatal. Weakness, paralysis, respiratory distress and intractable pain caused by nerve and muscle disease dramatically alters quality of life for both patients and families.

The Neuromuscular Center at CTNC is led by Adam Horvit, MD and specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of these and other neuromuscular disorders. We offer comprehensive evaluations, including EMG and nerve conduction studies, to achieve accurate diagnosis and state-of-the-art treatment modalities to optimize quality of life.

What is a neuromuscular disorder?
Neuromuscular diseases are acquired or inherited (genetic) conditions that affect some part of the neuromuscular system such as:
  • the muscles
  • the peripheral nerves in the arms, legs, neck and face
  • the neuromuscular junction where the nerves and muscles meet
  • the muscle-controlling nerve cells (motor neurons) in the spinal cord
At CTNC, we diagnosis and treat all neuromuscular disorders including:
  • Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS or Lou Gehrig's Disease)
  • Peripheral and autonomic neuropathies
  • Myopathies, including dermatomyositis, polymyositis and inclusion body myositis
  • Muscular dystrophies
  • Myasthenia gravis
  • Lambert-Eaton myasthenic syndrome
  • Charcot-Marie-Tooth Disease
  • Chronic Inflammatory Demyelinating Polyneuropathy (CIDP)
  • Guillain-Barre Syndrome (GBS)
  • Lumbosacral and Brachial plexopathies

We offer a broad range of treatments and services as part of a comprehensive approach to your care. Treatments typically include both medication and physical therapy in a caring and supportive environment. Surgery may also be recommended.

Tests
  • Electromyogram (EMG): Determines whether weakness or sensory loss you are experiencing is related to nerve or muscle disease. Techniques include nerve conduction studies in which electrodes are placed on the skin to stimulate nerves, as well as needle electromyography, which records and analyzes electrical activity in muscle.
  • Enzyme and blood tests: Measures an elevated muscle enzyme called creatine kinase and other conditions that may indicate a nerve or muscle disease.
  • Muscle Biopsy: Small amounts of muscle tissue and cells are obtained through a needle or small incision for examination under a microscope, as well as for biochemical and genetic evaluation.
  • Genetic Testing: Blood samples are examined for gene changes that may signal muscle disease.
MDA/ALS Clinics of Central Texas

They are multidisciplinary clinics and include neurology, respiratory services, physical therapy, occupational therapy and speech therapy. They are held two days per month at St. David's Round Rock Medical Center.
